GE Digital 2017

My Role

Here is a summary of my role/responsibilities on this project. See the sections below for more detail.

  • Set strategy and vision for UX/UI
  • Facilitated workshops with stakeholders and users to identify key features/functionality
  • Worked with product owner to develop a road map
  • Developed UX workstreams based on the product roadmap
  • Developed research and testing plan
  • Managed/supported the designers allocated to the project
  • Presented to senior leaders / key stakeholders
  • Created wireframes/visuals and other Ux artifacts as needed

Problem

Within GE Digital there was a lack of visibility into the key metrics and KPIs. Manual data collection across various source systems that was not maintained was required to understand if we were over or under achieving, taking time away from running the business. In addition, the same metric could have widely different definitions across the organization causing confusion.

Goal

Create a “single source of truth” for key metrics across GE Digital. Not simply a Business Intelligence tool, the DCC was meant to integrate with many existing data sources to create a view that provides not only information but insights to teams, enabling them to coordinate and make better decisions faster.

Users

  • heads of organizations
  • team leaders
  • individual contributors

Challenges

  1. Consolidating and automating multiple data sources
  2. Defining key metrics and understanding the impacts it has on the business
  3. Minimizing noise on the charts
  4. Allowing users to add their own data and build charts

Approach

Project Scale

• Involved 50+ people spread across the U.S & Mexico
• 3 time zones
• 10 Development pods

Project Scale
Operating Rhythm

Operating Rhythm

• 2 week sprints / monthly releases
• Daily Pod Standups
• Daily Scrum of Scrums(Pod leads)
• 2 UX Standups/week

User Interviews

We started by interviewing stakeholders within the major functional areas of GE Digital to understand what metrics drive change within the organization and how they would like to interact with them.

User Interviews
Data Viz Research

Data Viz Research

With charts and graphs being a focal point of the application, We researched and documented a set of best practices and implemented them as guardrails into the application.

Personas

Based on research we created personas to help us better understand our users and guide us through meeting their needs.

Personas
Design Thinking Workout

Design Thinking Workout

We brought together all the stakeholders from business owners, ux, users, tech, infrastructure, and security to share knowledge ensuring everyone is on the same page.

Whiteboarding / Brainstorming

We huddled around whiteboards and sketch out drawings, flows, lists, etc…

We explored several early concepts before deciding on a direction.

Whiteboarding / Brainstorming
Wireframes

Wireframes

Extensive wireframing and prototyping was conducted using Axure.

Card based design. Each card contained a set of features.

Pages contained sections.

Vertical Navigation that displayed as an overlay.

Visual Design

The visuals were created using sketch. Dark background to put the emphasis on the data being displayed within the charts.

Created a visual design system for charts
• Defined design specs for 8 chart types
• Defined 12 color palettes based on data type

Created a visual design system for application
• Defined 2 UI color palettes: Dark & Light
• Defined a global UI component library
• Defined two page types (Dashboard / Full screen)

Visual Design
Usability Testing

Usability Testing

Using Axshare and Invision, testing was conducted both onsite and remotely across desktop, tablets, and phones. Stakeholders and dev team members were invited to observe the usability test.

Testing was also conducted post launch on the live application.

Test Findings

The findings were documented, synthesized, and shared with the team. The designs were iterated on based on the findings. Enhancements were added to the backlog and prioritized appropriately.
